Values & Principles
Values & Principles of the UK
The UK is built on a foundation of values that everyone living here is expected to understand and respect. These principles shape laws, influence behavior, and define what it means to be British.

Democracy
民主
In the UK, the people have the power to choose their government through free and fair elections. Everyone aged 18 and over can vote, and there are multiple political parties representing different viewpoints.
'Demos' means 'people' in Greek - democracy is government BY the people.
'Demos'
Rule of Law
法治
No one is above the law, including the government and police. Laws are made by Parliament and applied equally to everyone. This principle was established by the Magna Carta in 1215.
'Even the King must follow the Rule' - the Magna Carta's lasting legacy.
Individual Liberty
People in the UK have freedom to live their lives as they choose, as long as they don't break the law or harm others. This includes freedom of speech, association, and thought.
'Liberty within Limits' - you're free, but your freedom ends where others' begins.
Your Responsibilities
Living in the UK comes with responsibilities as well as rights. Understanding and fulfilling these responsibilities is key to being part of British society.
