Constitution
The British Constitution
Unlike most countries, the UK does not have a single written constitution. Instead, it has an 'unwritten' or 'uncodified' constitution made up of laws, conventions, and traditions developed over centuries.

Sources of the Constitution
The UK constitution comes from: statute law (Acts of Parliament like the Bill of Rights 1689), common law (court decisions), conventions (unwritten rules), and works of authority (respected legal texts).
Parliamentary Sovereignty
The most important principle of the UK constitution is Parliamentary sovereignty - Parliament can make, change, or repeal any law. No Parliament can bind a future Parliament, and no other body can override Parliament.
'Parliament is Supreme' - the highest authority in the UK.
Constitutional Monarchy
The UK is a constitutional monarchy - the monarch is head of state but has limited powers. The monarch 'reigns but does not rule'. Day-to-day government is carried out by elected politicians.
