Key Acts
Laws tell the story of a nation's values evolving over time. These landmark Acts transformed Britain from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional democracy, expanded rights to all citizens, and shaped the nation we know today.

Constitutional Foundations
Magna Carta
The 'Great Charter' forced upon King John by rebellious barons at Runnymede. It established the principle that nobody, including the king, is above the law. Key provisions included the right to a fair trial and limits on taxation without representation.
'Magna' means 'great' in Latin - this was the GREAT beginning of limiting royal power.
Habeas Corpus Act
Latin for 'you shall have the body'. This Act protects individuals from unlawful detention. It requires that anyone arrested must be brought before a court within a reasonable time, preventing indefinite imprisonment without trial.
'Habeas Corpus' = 'Have the Body' - the court must 'have the body' of the prisoner to see they're being treated lawfully.
'Habeas Corpus'
Bill of Rights
Passed after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, this Act confirmed the rights of Parliament and established that the monarch cannot levy taxes or maintain a standing army without Parliament's consent. It created the foundation of constitutional monarchy.
'Sixteen Eighty-Nine, Parliament's power finally defined' - the year when royal power was formally limited.
From Royal Power to People's Power
Magna Carta

Bill of Rights
Parliament is supreme
Over 474 years, power gradually shifted from the king to Parliament. The Magna Carta planted the seed; the Bill of Rights harvested the fruit. One said 'even kings have limits', the other said 'Parliament rules'.
Union Acts
Act for the Government of Wales
These Acts united England and Wales legally, making Wales formally part of the Kingdom of England. Welsh law was replaced by English law, and English became the language of official business.

Act of Union (Scotland)
Created the Kingdom of Great Britain by uniting England and Scotland. Scotland kept its own legal and education systems, and the Church of Scotland remained separate. A new Parliament of Great Britain was created at Westminster.
'Seventeen Oh Seven, two kingdoms under one heaven' - Scotland and England united.

Abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, freeing more than 800,000 enslaved people. Slave owners received compensation; enslaved people received nothing. William Wilberforce, who campaigned for decades, died just three days after hearing the Act would pass.
'Eighteen Thirty-Three, Empire slavery-free' - remember the rhyme with 'free'.
Equal Franchise Act
Finally gave women the same voting rights as men - the right to vote at age 21. This followed decades of campaigning by suffragettes like Emmeline Pankhurst. The 1918 Act had only given the vote to women over 30.
