The Life in the UK Test is a 'knowledge of language and life' (KoLL) requirement. You must meet it when you apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (also called settlement) and again when you apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, although a single pass covers both. It is not needed for a visa extension, for a further period of limited leave, or for a child's application. For Hong Kong BNO visa holders on the 5+1 route, the test comes up at the ILR stage after five years' residence, and the same pass is reused for citizenship a year later.

Children do not sit the test. What matters is your age on the date the application is submitted, not the date you arrived or the date a decision is made. A 17-year-old included in a family ILR application is exempt; the same person applying for naturalisation after turning 18 will need a pass. For BNO families, this means teenagers who arrived at 13 or 14 may well turn 18 before the ILR application; if so, they take the test like any adult. Plan for it rather than being surprised.

If you are 65 or over on the date you apply, you do not need to take the Life in the UK Test for either ILR or citizenship. There is no form to fill in for this; your date of birth on the application does the work, and the caseworker applies the exemption automatically. Note that the age is counted at the application date, so a 64-year-old who applies the month before their birthday still needs a pass. If you are close to 65, check the dates: waiting a few weeks may remove the test from your list entirely. The 65-and-over exemption also applies to the English language requirement.

The Home Office checks your pass electronically using the unique reference number you were given at the centre, so keep that number and the pass notification with your immigration documents. This also means there is no reason to delay the test: passing in year two of a five-year route is just as valid as passing in year five.

The Life in the UK Test and the English language requirement are two separate parts of the same 'knowledge of language and life' rule, and you need to satisfy both unless you are exempt from each one separately. The English requirement is met with an approved Secure English Language Test (at the time of writing B1 or above for settlement and citizenship; the government has announced plans to raise the settlement level, so check gov.uk for the level that applies to you), a degree taught in English, or by being a national of a majority English-speaking country. Passing the Life in the UK Test does not prove your English, and passing an English test does not exempt you from the Life in the UK Test.
