This is the full Life in the UK Test process in the order it actually happens: booking on gov.uk, what to bring, what the centre does when you arrive, how the computer test works, how you get your result, and what to do whether you pass or fail. It is written from the candidate's side, with the official rules stated plainly. Where a rule can change, we tell you to check gov.uk rather than guess.

The only place to book is the official service linked from gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. There are no walk-in tests and no agents; any site that offers to 'book for you' for a fee is unnecessary. Have your ID document, an email address you check, and a debit or credit card ready. The whole booking takes about 10 minutes.

You must bring the same photo ID you entered when booking. gov.uk lists the accepted documents; at the time of writing they include a valid passport, a UK photocard driving licence, or an immigration document issued by the Home Office. If you hold an eVisa rather than a physical BRP, follow the ID guidance on gov.uk exactly, because the accepted list has changed as biometric cards were phased out. The rule that never changes: no valid ID, no test, no refund.

You also need to bring proof of your current address, and it must show the same address you gave when booking. Accepted examples on gov.uk include a gas, electricity or water bill, a bank or credit card statement, a council tax bill, or a letter from the Home Office with your address. Documents are usually required to be dated within the last 3 months. A photocard driving licence with your address can count if you are not already using it as your photo ID. Printed PDFs of online bills are normally accepted; a screenshot on your phone is not, because your phone is locked away.

The night before: check the centre address on a map (some are inside colleges or office buildings with confusing entrances), plan to arrive 30 minutes early, and do only a light review. Do not learn new material the night before; sleep is worth more marks than one more mock.

Arrive early. Centres run sessions to a timetable and can refuse late arrivals, in which case you lose the fee. At reception, staff check your photo ID against the booking, check your proof of address, and may take a photograph and signature for the record. You are then asked to put your phone, watch, bag, coat and any papers into a locker. Some centres also ask you to show your pockets or roll up sleeves. This is routine identity security, not suspicion.

Four question formats appear. Single answer (choose one of four options). Select two (two of four are correct; you must tick both). True or false (a statement, choose one). Which statement is correct (two statements, choose the right one). The 'select two' format is where most careless marks are lost, so read the instruction line under every question.

Results are given at the centre on the same day, usually within minutes of finishing. Staff call you to the desk and tell you whether you passed. The exact score is not always shown. If you pass, you receive your result as a unique reference number (some centres also print a letter). The Home Office checks your pass online using that number when you apply, so record it carefully, photograph it, and keep it with your immigration documents. A pass never expires.

Enter the unique reference number in the Life in the UK Test section of your ILR or naturalisation application. You do not upload the letter unless asked. Remember the test is only one of the requirements: for ILR on the BNO route you also need 5 years' continuous residence, the English language requirement (B1 or a qualifying degree), and to meet the absence limits. Passing the test early does not shorten the residence period, but it removes one thing from the critical path.

You can re-sit as many times as you need. You must wait 7 days before taking the test again, and each attempt costs £50 and needs a new booking. Most people who fail were one to three questions short; a targeted week on the topics that tripped you up is usually enough. Do not immediately rebook for day 8 out of frustration. Rebook for about two weeks out, do five mocks in that time, and read the Summary Notes.

If you have a disability or health condition that affects how you take a computer test, you can ask for reasonable adjustments (for example extra time, a wheelchair-accessible centre, a screen reader, or a separate room). State your needs when you book and contact the booking service before the test date so the centre can prepare; asking on the day is usually too late. Candidates with a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents them from ever taking the test may be exempt from the requirement altogether, with a doctor's letter, as part of the ILR or citizenship application. Test centres cannot grant exemptions.

£50 per attempt, paid by card when booking. There is no refund if you fail, miss the test, or arrive without valid ID. Check gov.uk for the current fee before booking.

24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. You need 18 correct (75%) to pass. There is no negative marking, so always answer every question.

At least 3 days before the test date. In practice, book 2 to 4 weeks ahead so you get the centre and time you want and a fixed deadline to revise towards.
